Khlong Toei, Another Side of Bangkok

I have always had an affinity for the poor, those that have to make do, those that were in the wrong line when silver spoons were being handed out. One reason is my own background, which I won’t get into here, lets just say I have been around the block more than once. Some of the reasons I’m attracted to the less than well off, is because in poverty I have found beauty in the human spirit, a sense of community and a richness of spirit that money cannot buy.

Khlong Toei is an area in Bangkok known for it’s sub standard housing. It is also home to the largest open air vegetable market in the world. The stats you can find on the internet do not tell you a great deal about the people. The residents here are some of the most friendly you will find anywhere, always willing to share whatever they have with me, rushing to spend a few hard to come by Baht to buy me a soda or ice water. Are you hungry? Is a typical Thai phrase and one of the first things I am asked when visiting friends in Khlong Toei.

Street Begging Elephant

Today it is hot in Prachinburi, Thailand. As the elephant walks the streets, it’s sensitive feet have to be hot, I walked barefoot yesterday for a short time and my feet were burning. The mahout asks for 80 baht for a small sack of food to feed the elephant. I refuse saying I cannot support elephant abuse. I ask the mahout about the elephant. The mahout suddenly cannot speak english any longer. The mahout is carrying small sacks of food to sell for people to feed the elephant. People buying the food to feed the elephant probably do not know that adult elephants eat between 200-600 pounds of food a day, even for a baby elephant the sacks of food are a drop in the bucket. The mahout is just a worker, street elephants are usually owned by rich business people most often in Bangkok. Prachinburi, Thailand, March 11, 2015.

Amulet Sales

Amulets are a big deal in Thailand. They are worn around the neck, and hung from mirrors in vehicles to protect their owners from every sort of calamity. There is also a large interest in collecting used amulets. The depiction, who issued the amulet, where and when can make an amulet valuable.

Here a local man inspects amulets for sale with a loupe at our local market in Nakhon Nayok, Thailand. March 08, 2015.
